A Seat on the Board for PR

PR Belongs On The Board of Directors—This has been a pet peeve of mine for years—why aren’t public relations professionals on the Boards of Directors? There are attorneys. There are accountants. Why not PR? All one has to do is look at the recent issues surrounding all the big banks and financial institutions, especially AIG, Citi, Bank of America. Then look at Detroit and their ability to commit one of the biggest PR blunders ever—the use of private planes when visiting Washington with cup in hand for government hand outs. Could having PR people on the board have done any more harm? I think not. The issue is that the lawyers and financial types command more attention than anyone else. The CEO mentality is don’t take any risks; “CYA” folks reign supreme in corporate America. These guys would be far better served by professional communications counsel by their side.
